It is no wonder that there has been so much interest and medical research done on this food.

How do newborn mammals start their lives off on the right foot, so to speak?  All newborn mammals including human babies receive a nutritional kick-start from their first few meals. Those first few meals are not milk; rather those first few meals are a nutritionally concentrated liquid created by the mother, which precedes the production of milk, and that liquid is called colostrum.

Colostrum contains over 60 components and we are still learning about all of the ways in which it is essential to newborns.

You can learn more about how a mothers colostrum benefits newborn babies here.

Similarly, we are also still learning about the many ways that colostrum supplementation can benefit people of all ages as we will look at in the next section.

Some Colostrum History

Colostrum is the supreme biologically perfect food for newborn mammals.  It is everything they need in order to firstly survive and then flourish as the transition is made from the biological womb to this planetary womb.  With that said, the history of adults and children consuming colostrum and it being used medicinally goes back thousands of years and across multiple cultures.

For example, some scholars believe that there is evidence in Ancient Egyptian History (The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, translated by James Henry Breasted) of colostrum used as an important component of post-surgery recovery. There is extensive use of colostrum in the Ayurvedic medical tradition. Colostrum is drunk in India to this day. Countries such as Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Ireland and England have a long history of both drinking colostrum and using it to make various types of custards, puddings and cheese dishes. This is with their understanding (born of generational wisdom) that colostrum helps the family to remain healthy all year round. The Masai people of Kenya and Tanzania drink colostrum and they attribute their strength and health to it in grateful songs of praise. On the North American continent, from the late 18th century to the 20th century, colostrum was prescribed for immune system support and for fighting bacterial infections. It fell out of use after the development of penicillin and other anti-biotics. In the 1950’s colostrum was also used in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Additionally, Dr. Albert Sabin, who is the doctor who developed the polio vaccine, had discovered that colostrum contained antibodies against polio. He recommended the use of colostrum for children who were susceptible to catching the disease. Finally, one of the food items common to the remarkably robust and healthy centenarians of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Abkhasia is colostrum. This is according to the research and subsequent national bestseller by John Heinerman entitled, Heinerman’s Encyclopedia of Anti-aging Remedies.

Colostrum Today

Today we take colostrum supplements, which we derive from Bovine (cow) Colostrum.  The molecular structure in the immune and growth factors of bovine colostrum is very similar to that of human colostrum and as a result is effective for humans.  Interestingly research has also shown that only bovine colostrum is not species specific and therefore is beneficial to other mammals in addition to humans.  In other cultures and in other historical times, people have drunk colostrum from cow, goat, sheep, reindeer and water buffalo.

There was a resurgence of interest in medical applications of colostrum starting around the late 1980’s.  In the intervening 30+ years there have been thousands of medical and research studies conducted into multiple medical applications for colostrum.♠♠  These many studies have looked into the use of colostrum for a wide variety of uses in possible medical treatments for auto-immune diseases, cancer, chronic viral infections including HIV, allergies, cardiovascular disease, anti-aging benefits, tissue repair (topically for open wounds, post-surgery, burns, mouth ulcers, gum disease), sports medicine, weight loss and various gastrointestinal diseases.  In addition to the sport medicine research, there is also research that has been conducted which looks at colostrum supplementation for enhanced performance in endurance related sports activity as well as shortened recovery times in between training and events.

The research has shown that colostrum is a unique, living, whole food and has many healthful properties, which are beneficial to people of all ages and for a wide variety of purposes.  In future articles I will take a more detailed look at how colostrum is benefiting people in specific areas such as athletic support, anti-aging benefits, gastrointestinal tract illness’, autoimmune disorders, etc.
