Nutritional Support For Your Brain

In the past few years, there has been increasing interest in the brain, brain function, brain health, and brain nutritional/nutraceutical support.  So, we are playing brain training games, drinking more water and paying closer attention to what we eat, but are there specific nutrients that we should look at supplementing our diet with?  Absolutely, there are several nutrients that have been studied extensively for their ability to improve cognition, and memory and preventing and/or ameliorating dementia and other degenerative neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

We augment our diets with additional nutrients in the form of various vitamins because the research shows that we are deficient and require the additional support for our bodies to maintain health.  Likewise, our brains have specific nutrient requirements in order to enjoy optimal function for now and in future years.

Studies show that people as early as their mid-forties can begin to lose memory and brain dexterity.  This is earlier than previously believed.  In the U.S. 40% of people aged 65 or older have age associated memory impairment.1   In Canada, a staggering 1 in 11 people have Alzheimer’s Disease or a related dementia.2  Note that, not every person who experiences age related memory loss will develop dementia; but neither outcome is desirable.  It is better by far to take some simple lifestyle measures now, in order to avoid either of those outcomes.

For people who want to make a brain healthy supplement a part of their daily regimen, I highly recommend SomaLife IQ150.  This recommendation is based not only on personal experience but also on the science behind this particular product.

In the next section, I have taken each ingredient, which comprises IQ150, and presented some of the vast scientific research, which substantiates the value of each component of this formulation, to healthy brain function.  Currently SomaLife has a special offer for you to check it out and experience for yourself.

Turmeric Root Powder        Prevent Alzheimer’s, Cardiovascular Disease Etc!

One of the powerful components of turmeric is called curcumin which studies have found to be beneficial for the following:  Helicobacter pylori, (previously named Campylobacter pylori), Stomach Ulcers, Some types of Cancer, General Enhanced Immunity, As an Anti-oxidant, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-microbial and for its **Protective Effects on the Cardiovascular System

**There is special significance with regards to the relationship between Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Alzheimer ’s disease.
“Growing evidence supports a strong and likely causal association between cardiovascular disease (CVD), and its risk factors, with incidence of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.  Individuals with subclinical CVD are at higher risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s. Several cardiovascular risk factors are also risk factors for dementia, including hypertension, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol and especially diabetes.”

Phosphatidylserine (PS)        Prevent/Reverse Memory Loss!

“PS is far more abundant in the brain than in the other organs, and has the most clinical significance as a brain nutrient.”
“The 16 clinical trials completed with PS for cognition (11 of which were double-blind) consistently indicate PS provides metabolic support for memory, learning, concentration, and behavior.”  “Crook and the MAC group have modernized and stream lined tests for cognitive function, and their findings indicate cognitive decline is already well underway by the 5th decade of life.  It is likely that the earlier PS can be started, the more completely it might ameliorate progressive loss of the higher brain functions.”
Alternative Medicine Review – Thorne Research – Volume 1, Number 2, 1996

“New research suggests that the biochemical processes that lead to cognitive decline represent a modifiable risk factor for the development of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease and that, two essential brain nutrients, phosphatidylserine and alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC), may enable aging humans to forestall or even reverse declines in memory and cognitive performance.”

Green Tea Extract        Alter Brain Aging Process and More!

“Epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies have established a positive correlation between green tea consumption and cardiovascular health.  Catechins, the major polyphenolic compounds in green tea, exert vascular protective effects through multiple mechanisms, including anti-oxidative, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, anti-thrombogenic, and lipid lowering effects.”

“Green tea polyphenols are now being considered as therapeutic agents in well controlled epidemiological studies, aimed to alter brain aging processes and to serve as possible neuroprotective agents in progressive neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.”
The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry Volume 15, Issue 9, September 2004, Pages 506–516

“Observational studies indicate that green tea may provide protection against hypertension and reduce the risk for stroke, and interventional studies are providing biochemical and physiological evidence.”  In addition, “Although the overall clinical evidence is inconclusive, habitual green tea consumption may be providing some level of chemoprevention in prostate and breast cancer. Green tea may also attenuate the risk factors association with the development of atherosclerosis thus reducing the incidence of cardiovascular events and stoke.”

Caffeine (from Coffee Beans)    Loaded with Healthful Flavonoids!

Coffee beans contain compounds called flavonoids.
“The flavonoids have aroused considerable interest recently because of their potential beneficial effects on human health-they have been reported to have antiviral, anti-allergic, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activities.”  In addition, the antioxidant effects of flavonoids are of great interest, because “oxidative stress has been linked to cancer, aging, atherosclerosis, ischemic injury, inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s).”  “Flavonoids may help provide protection against these diseases by contributing, along with antioxidant vitamins and enzymes, to the total antioxidant defense system of the human body.”

Phosphatidylcholine (PC)       Stimulates Growth of New Brain Cells!

Phosphatidylcholine is being studied by neuroscientists for it potential to prevent cognitive decline, dementia the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and even to regrow brain cells as we age.  Studies by Elizabeth Gould and Charles Gross of Princeton University, found that Phosphatidylcholine was able to stimulate the growth of new brain cells and neural connections.  This process is known as neurogenesis and scientists used to believe that it was impossible after a certain age.  Phosphatidylcholine is a key building block of cell membranes, which means it protects the cells that line not only the digestive tract and the liver, but the brain and nerve cells as well.

Spanish Sage Extract       Enhanced Memory Performance!

This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, balanced, five-period crossover study investigated the acute effects on cognitive performance of a standardized extract of Salvia Officinalis (Sage) in older adults.  In addition, similar beneficial results were found when trials were conducted with young adults.  Researchers found a “significant enhancement of secondary memory performance at all testing times compared with the placebo group.”
“There also were significant improvements to accuracy of attention.”

Essential Fatty Acids

In conclusion, I would add a note about Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s).  We have heard the message about the importance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 EFA’s.  It is vital to our overall health that we receive these healthy fats in our diet daily.  Additionally, the importance of these healthy fats specifically for our brain cannot be overstated.  Make sure that you are eating foods high in omega 3 and 6 EFA’s daily, such as, salmon, mackerel, nuts, seeds, kale, spinach, collards and oils such as flax, borage, evening primrose or black currant seed oil.  If this is a bit of a challenge, then it is a really good idea to choose a daily omega supplement to ensure that you receive these important nutrients daily.

“The human brain is nearly 60 percent fat.  We’ve learned in recent years that fatty acids are among the most crucial molecules that determine your brain’s integrity and ability to perform.”… “Clinical observation studies has related imbalance dietary intake of fatty acids to impaired brain performance and diseases.”

    Hi Ann,
I have had such a noticeably positive experience with IQ150. I believe that when a supplement combination is carefully put together utilizing the most up to date research and expertise, the synergy of the combination can be more powerful than a single element on it’s own. This is I believe, is a large part of the reason that IQ150 is so effective for learning, retention, recall, and overall brain health and support. Dementia and Alzheimer’s rates are soaring and these illnesses do not develop overnight but the conditions that lead to them begin years before. So, by improving our nutrition and by added nutritional assistance that is brain specific, we can give our brain the support needed to maintain optimal health. Give it try and let us know your experience with IQ150–we would love to hear from you. Thank You Ann for your feedback.
